Abstract

Exploring the Universe requires more than transporting instruments: it requires sustaining the ability to ask questions, build tools and respond to unfamiliar conditions. Advances in agentic artificial intelligence, generalist robotics and autonomous laboratories suggest that some of these functions could increasingly operate beyond Earth. Yet autonomous discovery does not by itself create an autonomous engineering system, and neither guarantees a durable civilization. Here we synthesize evidence across artificial intelligence, robotics, experimental science, space systems and industrial production to distinguish capabilities already demonstrated from the connections still required. We argue that autonomous engineering is the critical bridge: transforming knowledge into independently verified physical capabilities that can be deployed, maintained and improved. Their persistence depends on energy, materials, manufacturing, metrology, computing and institutions; their inheritance requires re-establishing these dependencies at another site, not merely copying software. We propose tests of locally developed capability, net scientific–engineering benefit and cross-site inheritance, and examine their implications for biological continuity and governance. This perspective reframes long-term exploration around the deployment, development and inheritance of civilization capabilities, without assuming inevitable expansion or complete self-sufficiency.
