Before Qualia, Strategic Existence Begins

Abstract

Philosophers of mind have long debated qualia — the felt character of experience — while paying little attention to the physical architecture that must bound it. The T4 bacteriophage — a mindless nanoscale machine whose structure executes functions mapping onto both empowering and disempowering strategies from Forde's framework of social dynamics — demonstrates that before evolution can select anything, a physically possible causal architecture must already exist for selection to exploit. The strategies mapped include security, knowledge, hope, fairness, unity, and dignity, alongside their darker counterparts: nativism, hierarchy, misinformation, subjugation, dehumanization, and fear. Each concept is paired with a specific biological mechanism — virion stability, irreversible adsorption, superinfection exclusion, host genome degradation, among others — demonstrating that the mapping is grounded in observable structure, not metaphor. The paper proposes a conceptual framework, not a theory of viral cognition. It makes no claim that the virus possesses agency or qualia. It argues instead that strategy does not begin with a mind. It begins with architecture. Before qualia, strategic existence begin.
