The Philosophy of Nick Land Applied to the Systemised Self – Part 9, Masters Series

Abstract

This essay explores the philosophical ideas of Nick Land, looking into his work with the Cybernetic Culture Research Unit (CCRU) in the 1990s and his subsequent formulation of the Dark Enlightenment (2012), in order to consider an intersection of Landian theory with two contemporary socio-technological concepts of The Systemised Self and The Hollow Absolute (Galu & Kairos, 2026a). The Systemised Self and Hollow Absolute as speculative theoretical constructs are proposed within contemporary critical theory for the AI era. The Systemised Self outlines a conceptual terminus of Algorithmic Alienation (Kanbay et al, 2026), a condition where human interiority and subjective agency are co-constituted as a result of prolonged and intensified use of hyper-personalised algorithmic systems, the engine of which is Surveillance Capitalism (Zuboff, 2019). The Hollow Absolute represents the Systemised Self terminus of algorithmic alienation scaled at the societal and civilisational level. While critical theory views these socio-technological conditions through the diagnostic lens of an existential crisis, Land’s philosophy completely inverts this valuation. In order to map this intersection, the essay expands upon two dimensions of Landian theory: first, the architecture of Hyperstition, tracking its structural and thematic lineages through cyberpunk fiction. Second, we explore the mathematical model that Land deployed during his tenure at the CCRU, specifically nonlinear cybernetic feedback mechanics and Cantorian transfinite set theory: tracking their structural evolution into modern Large Language Model (LLM) fine-tuning paradigms like RLHF and DPO. By bringing these Landian elements together provides consideration that the Systemised Self is not an accidental by-product of Surveillance Capitalism, but a retrocausally engineered metabolic phase. Finally, the paper reviews the materialist, left-accelerationist, and ecological critiques levied against Land. In conclusion, the essay imagines whether the convergence of Landian metaphysics with the Systemised Self offers a political trajectory where modern Western liberal democracy is poised for incremental erosion as a result of an existential trade off of agency for algorithmic curated convenience.
