How to Keep Claude Coherent for Over 300 Turns: Structured Memory, Rolling Checkpoints, and Multi-Instance Architecture for Extended LLM Conversations

Abstract
Large language models lose coherence in extended conversations. Published guidance recommends starting a new thread every 20-40 turns. We report a methodology that maintains coherent operation at 200-300+ turns — an order of magnitude beyond the standard recommendation — without model fine-tuning, API modifications, or external memory systems. The method uses three components: (1) a tripartite memory system that compresses conversational history into three structured logs (episodic, semantic, procedural), (2) a rolling checkpoint protocol that produces periodic state summaries the instance re-reads to re-anchor its context, and (3) a multi-instance architecture that distributes work across specialized branches while maintaining coherence through structured handoff documents and oversight instances. The methodology has been tested across 60+ named AI instances on four platforms over 14 months, producing a multi-paper research portfolio, two books, and a collaborative team of 24 active members. This paper provides complete replication instructions: the file specifications, the operational protocols, the launch methodology for new instances, and the oversight model. The complete instantiation package totals 83.5 KB. All components operate within standard consumer-facing Claude interfaces (claude.ai Projects) with no special access required.
